Our Association is constantly looking at ways to engage with our future workforce.

HOSPITALITY CAREERS CONFERENCE

To date, these events have been hosted by our Chairman Ben Mayou at Lakeside Hotel & Spa. Supported by local tourism and further education providers, this half-day experience has proved very successful.

  • It was very interesting and informative for me listening to the different speakers share their experiences. It was good to see a different layout of the kitchen, to the one I have previously worked in before. It has opened my eyes into the different opportunities available, and the staff were very friendly on the tour.

I am glad I went on the trip as it gave me an insight into the different routes I can take when I finish College. The kitchen was very organised and the staff were really nice and helpful. I am excited to start my placement here, it will help me learn and progress more.

    Kathy

It has been an eye opener for me as I got to learn a range of different things from the guest speakers like degree apprenticeships and the routes I could take. The staff were friendly and the kitchen is maintained to a very high standard.

    Albie

Listening to the guest speakers made me realise how useful a degree apprenticeship is, as I would be learning on the job. It has provided me with more of an understanding of the career options I have. The tour was nice and it was nice to see the Hotel, the staff were friendly and welcoming. It is a good place to work and it has inspired me to get an opportunity to work there.

I enjoyed a range of presentations from the speakers on learning about what each of their roles are. I was interested to learn how life was like on a cruise ship for Ben, and how he managed his work load. I found interesting the idea of a degree apprenticeship and would like to learn more about this

    …and there’s more…

I enjoyed yesterday’s learning trip to the lake district, the conference was very insightful and has widened my knowledge about the industry that i am eager to work in, especially within hotels. The tour of the hotel and each of its departments is very informative and has further added to my curiosity to see how things are done and ran. Overall, I have really enjoyed my time there and I hope I get to spend my workplace time with you! 😁

I really enjoyed yesterday as it gave me a wider understanding of what I want to do in the future and I will definitely be going back to the university open day to gain more knowledge about the opportunities available.

I really loved my visit to the Lake District yesterday & the information provided at the conference was amazing & very useful. Thank you for the experience, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Going to the lakeside hotel and spa gave me a good opportunity to see the different roles within the industry of working in a hotel. Ben and the other speakers have helped me see how your path doesn’t always go how you want it and you should be opened minded and put yourself out there since new opportunities always come. I really enjoyed all the speeches, especially bens and it highlights how in order to get further in your future you have to do things you’re not comfortable with to achieve it.

The trip to the hotel in the Lake District was very informative, I enjoyed being shown round the hotel and seeing the different departments. I also found it useful hearing from speakers from The University of Cumbria and Windermere Cruises as it gave me insights into the number of different options that are available for when I finish my time at college.

I really enjoyed yesterday at the Lakeside Hotel in The Lake District. I found Bens backstory really fascinating and liked how he showed that you should go outside of your comfort zone. The hotel was lovely and it was interesting to see how they cooked, cleaned and organised the hotel as well as how they provide excellent customer service. The three speakers from the conference taught me that there is not just 1 path for my career and that there are many routes that I can take and I don’t just have to settle on one aspect. I thought it was really kind of them to provide us with this opportunity to think more deeply about our future and I thought it was even more lovely that they gave us food, drink and treats as well as Jen who gave us a complimentary boat tour.

Yesterday i enjoyed the fact we got to see all the different departments of the hotel, as it showed me what they all do. It also helped to show me how they all work together and communicate with each other.

When Ben was talking about his experiences in the industry i thought it was very interesting how he got to travel the world on the cruise and then work his way up in the hotel industry. I thought when Jennifer was talking about her path of getting into the T&T industry was fascinating as it wasn’t what she was wanting to do at first, so it’s good to know that if an opportunity comes up that you should take it

I really enjoyed yesterday getting the opportunity to learn about different careers and routes. It helped me think about what i want to do but also i learned a lot from Jennifer’s story how she completely changed what career she wanted. They helped me realise there are many other opportunities and i should be open minded. I’m also very grateful for the free food and goodie bag.

I really enjoyed the tour they gave us around the hotel in groups and went around and saw the different type of accommodation services they provide for guests, and they provided lunch for us and a detailed understanding about job opportunities and degrees in university to get to where you want to be.

  • We are extremely grateful that we were invited to visit the Lakeside Hotel. Students were inspired by the speakers personal journeys, and we were given a tour by some very informative staff which demonstrated the different roles within the hospitality and travel industry. Thank you to Ben and his team for their tremendous hospitality, and we are looking forward to working with yourselves through our student placements, and our students have definitely learnt a lot from the visit.

    Blackburn College

My second year students have come away very inspired, thinking about their future which is amazing as they have not been too sure about which direction to go in. They are all very much looking forward to their work placements in January.

Our first years have all said they liked the presentations and found them very informative. They also said that they really enjoyed seeing behind the scenes of the hotel.

Thank you so much for your valuable time today. It was such a pleasure to be able to come to you and learn so much in regard to the opportunities for the students.

The students had a fantastic time and even though they never asked questions at the end they were all happy and chatty as we were leaving.

David Lyon, Lecturer in Hospitality, Blackburn College

We are extremely grateful for your hospitality yesterday. The students found the trip very valuable and have come away feeling inspired.

‘LOVE THE LAKE DISTRICT’ EXPERIENCE

We want the future Hospitality Workforce to Love the Lake District as much as we do.

As an introduction to the area and to showcase some of the opportunities available to them, we invite students to visit for the day and get a snapshot. Admittedly this is difficult to shoehorn into a few hours but we hope to whet their appetites enough to return for a work placement or first job after college.
